Today I successfully defended my Masters research. My work involved looking at glacier recession on Mt. Rainier, Washington and Mt. Hood, Oregon and the implications for possible debris flow hazards from the recession. I worked with Anne Nolin in the Geoscience Department at Oregon State University. My Masters is an M.S. in Geography with a focus on Remote Sensing. I also got my Masters GIS certificate for my work with Geographic Information Systems. My mom flew into town for a long weekend to watch me defend. My office mate Sarah showed up along with Jason & Jen, Mischa, Colin, Doug, Alexa, Kevin, Evan and Brendan so I had a good support group to look at throughout the presentation. The first slide went pretty rough for me but then I took a deep breath, looked at Emily, and relaxed. The rest of the presentation went smoothly and after the defense my committee was pretty easy on me. Anne gave me a big hug when they let me back into the room and congratulated me on passing. I can’t say enough how much I owe Anne for everything she has done for me. She was only in town for 2 days but was able to re-work my presentation with me and help me out a lot. It’s because of her that we got NSF funding and I was able to quit my bartending job at Ruby’s. It’s also because of her that I now am going to be employed as a full-time employee at Watershed Sciences. This fall Emily and I are definitely going to have her over for dinner! Anyway, I’m not going to go into great detail about my research here. Perhaps I’ll post my thesis somewhere on this website when I am done with all of my edits and it is published by the University. For now, I plan to relax for a couple weeks and climb a mountain or two!
I’m ready for the next chapter of my life. Bring it.
