Today Emily and I took Leo out to Larch Mountain for an afternoon hike. It’s not too far from Portland and we hadn’t been up it before. We started our hike at the base of the mountain to create a loop up and around the crater of the ancient volcano. For the most part it was pretty uninteresting until we got to the top. We did get to see a lot of mushrooms and it seemed like everyone around us was walking out with bags of Chanterelles but of course we didn’t have any luck finding any!
The top of Larch Mountain was certainly amazing. It consists of a large volcanic outcrop that is the old core of the ancient volcano. It is left because the rock type erodes slower than that of the ground around it. This leaves a towering monolith of rock at the summit to climb up for views of St. Helens, Hood, Adams, Rainier, Jefferson and all the surrounding peaks of the Columbia Gorge. 
It was a bit cloudy when we were up there so all we could see was partial views of Mt. Hood but I bet the views would be amazing a cold crisp winter day if we wanted to hike up through the snow. Seeing that the road goes all the way to the top it would probably be a great place to bring my mom when she comes out as well.
